Social Groups of Monkeys, Apes and Men

چکیده
Sociologists and anthropologists recognise the 'face to face' group ?in which all the individuals meet each other in the course of the day's activities?as a primary group in all types of human society. This kind of group is similar to that which exists in sub-human primates. In a small human society, relationships tend to be personal and it matters a great deal more who a man is than what he does. Strong positive and negative attitudes in the relationships of business, professional and governmental complexes are based not mainly on role performance as shop assistant, doctor and clerk, but on family and friendship connections?as long as the unit is a small one. The mentality of crows: convergent evolution of intelligence in corvids and apes.
Discussions of the evolution of intelligence have focused on monkeys and apes because of their close evolutionary relationship to humans. Other large-brained social animals, such as corvids, also understand their physical and social worlds. Here we review recent studies of tool manufacture, mental time travel, and social cognition in corvids, and suggest that complex cognition depends on a "too...
متن کاملOld World Monkeys Compare to Apes in the Primate Cognition Test Battery
Understanding the evolution of intelligence rests on comparative analyses of brain sizes as well as the assessment of cognitive skills of different species in relation to potential selective pressures such as environmental conditions and social organization. Because of the strong interest in human cognition, much previous work has focused on the comparison of the cognitive skills of human toddl...
متن کاملIn-Group Conformity Sustains Different Foraging Traditions in Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus apella)
BACKGROUND Decades of research have revealed rich cultural repertoires encompassing multiple traditions in wild great apes, a picture crucially complemented by experimental simulations with captive apes. Studies with wild capuchin monkeys, the most encephalized simian species, have indicated a New World convergence on these cultural phenomena, involving multiple traditions and tool use. However...
متن کاملNew World Monkeys
New World monkeys are the nonhuman primates of South and Central America. Because almost all of their evolutionary history took place on the island continent of South America without competition from other primates, and most likely in a strictly arboreal setting, the character of their adaptation is unique. Fossils and molecules indicate the major lineages are long enduring, having attained div...
متن کاملMonkeys and Prosimians: Social Learning
In this chapter, we highlight examples of social influences on learning observed in prosimians and monkeys and consider the role of socially mediated learning in the biology of these animals. Learning is always the outcome of interacting physical, social, and individual factors and takes place over time. Thus, we cannot parse learning, either as a process or as an outcome, into portions that ar...
